Past Perfect​

Complete the sentences with the Past Perfect form of the verbs in brackets.

1 The phone rang while Mark was cooking sausages on a barbecue. When he came back, they had all gone. The other people at the party (had eaten) them all.

2 We were driving along the motorway when, suddenly, we stopped. There were lots of cars and none of them were moving. Two cars (had crashed) and the police (had closed) the road so that an ambulance could come and take the injured people to hospital.

3 There was a forest fire near our house. Someone (had thrown) away a cigarette. Because it (had not rained) for several weeks, everything was very dry and the fire started quickly.

4 We went to the Olympic Games swimming competition. My dad (had bought) tickets two years before but he (had not told) us about them so it was a big surprise.
