PARTISAN & RESISTANCE FICHTERS Across Europe, as nations fell to the Nazis, resistance and partisan fighters fought against the occupying forces from the Soviet Union, to Yugoslavia, to Norway, to France, and beyond. In France, women made up around 20 % of the resistance fighters, and among the 30,000 Jewish resistance members, approximately 10 % were also women. Although some women were cooking for the other fighters or working as nurses, some worked as smugglers, couriers, spies, and even active fighters. Jewish women who wanted to join the resistance faced opposition from non-Jewish members. One reason was that the Nazis were always trying to find any Jew who had escaped a ghetto or camp. Hiding an escapee could put the entire operation at risk. Secondly. some members of the partisans were anti-Semitic themselves. Third, they had biases that the women would not help to advance their cause. Jewish women who were taken in tended to have extensive knowledge of the area, which was key for the partisans to be able to move without being caught. All Jewish resistance movements welcomed women readily as they sought to sabotage the Germans and rescue Jews. One member, Eta Wrobel, was able to save one hundred people in one year
