Once Mark Twain was going from the north of England to
Manchester by train. He was very tired and wanted to
go to bed. So he asked the guard to wake him up when
they came to Manchester. “If I sleep when
you come up to me, I shall be angry,” he said.
“But even if I am angry, please throw me out of the train.”
The guard agreed and Mark Twain went to bed.
When he woke up it was morning. People were talking in the corridor, a boy was crying and his mother tried to make him quiet. Mark Twain put, on his clothes
and went out in the corridor. The guard was talking to a
man and Mark Twain went up to him.
“Have come we to Manchester yet?” he asked.
“We passed Manchester two hours ago,” the guard answered.
“What!” Mark Twain shouted. “Why you not didn’t tell me, you did you forget that I had asked you?”
The guard was surprised. “You arc the American
who asked to wake him up when we came to
Manchester?” he asked.
“Yes, of course,” Mark Twain said.
The guard continued, “Oh, now I understand why the man was shouting and fighting when
I threw him out of the train in Manchester.
