Martin Strel - or Big River Man, as he is often called - is a long distance swimmer from Slovenia. Martin (teach) himself to swim when he was six, and in 1997 he (become) the first man to swim from Africa to Europe by crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Seven people (already try) to complete this swim without success. In 2002 Strel (swim) the length of the Mississippi, which (take) him 68 days. The year before that he (break) the world no-stop record by swimming for 84 hours and 10 minutes without stopping. But he's probably best known as the man who (swim) the length of the Amazon in 2007, something nobody (ever do) before. He (travel) 5,268 km and (swim) for over 10 hours a day. By the time he (arrive) at Belem, in Brazil, he (be) in the water for 66 days. He now runs an adventure swimming holiday company with his son in Slovenia.
