Важно помнить, что  когда мы задаём вопрос к подлежащему, используя слова who/what (кто/что), то представляем, что это кто-то в единственном числе!

А вот в кратком ответе глагол согласовывается с подлежащим.

Поэтому:

1 The boys are at the stadium.

  Who is at the stadium?

The boys are.

2 His parents were happy.

  Who was happy?

   His parents were.

3 The pupils write exercises.

Whо writes exercises?

The pupils do.

4 Mice ate the cheese.

  Who ate the cheese?

- Mice did.

5 Tom and Jack have got a snake.

 Who has got a snake?

- Tom and Jack​ have.
