Vertebrates Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone inside their body. The major groups include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Fish are cold-blooded animals and they live in water. Amphibians live in water, too. But they haven’t got lungs and can’t live in water all the time. Birds, mammals and reptiles live on land. Reptiles are different a little bit. They have got lungs, scales, but not gills. They haven’t any wings, fins or feathers. Reptile, like chameleons and lizards have got four legs, except for snakes. They are cold-blooded animals and many of them live in warm places.
