A Bridge Across the English Channel
(1) For many years, the idea of a direct link between England and France attracted the attention of scientists and engineers. Most of them thought that an underwater tunnel would be the best solution of the problem. However, William Frichman, an English engineer, suggested quite a different concept. Here is his project.
(2) It is a bridge that would provide the best communi¬cation across the English Channel. The bridge is to be carried by supports 800 m high that is, two and a half times as high as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is to be about 40 km long, with a deck carrying two or three road¬ways for motor traffic in both directions and a double-track railway. The strength of the reinforced concrete bridge structure would be enough to withstand winds of great force. The bridge carrying capacity would be 10,000 motor cars per hour. The cost of the bridge would be about 4.5 billion dollars.
