A group of people called the Nabateans built Petra about
2,500 years ago. For about 500 years, Petra was a capital

the city was empty. But in 1812, a Swiss explorer called Johann
Ludwig Burckhardt was the first European visitor to the city.
In 1989, Petra was in the film Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade. After that, the city was famous all over the world.
