Thermometers measure temperature by using materials that change in some way when they are heated or cooled. In a mercury or alcohol thermometer, the liquid expands as it is heated and contracts when it is cooled, so the length of the liquid column increases or decreases depending on the temperature.
Temperature is measured in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. In the early years of the 18th century, Gabriel Fahrenheit created the Fahrenheit scale. He set the freezing point of water at 32F and the boiling point at 212= F. Later, in 1743, Anders Celsius invented the Celsius scale, determining the freezing temperature for water to be 0C and the boiling temperature to be 100C. This scale is used throughout science and in most countries.
