*There are many great places to visitin Kyiv. Here are three places you cansee in a weekend.* Saint Sophia Cathedral is a striking white building in the
centre of Kyiv. It's topped with attractive green and gold
domes. It's no surprise that it's one of the seven wonders
of Ukraine. Prince Yaroslav the Wise gave orders to build
the cathedral in 1037. Inside the church there are a lot of
old frescos, or wall paintings, and mosaics. They are still
beautiful today although they are almost one thousand
years old.
The Horodetskyi Building was finished in 1902. It is
worth seeing for the mythical creatures made up of parts
of other animals (for example, a creature with a lion's
head, a goat's body and a snake's tail) which decorate
the building. Because of this it is called the House of Chimeras
(a chimera is a mythical creature). Not all the decorations are
animals. You can see flowers, mermaids and ships, too. Vladyslav
Horodetskyi, the architect who designed it, is called the Gaudí
of Kyiv because this building looks like buildings in Barcelona by
Antoni Gaudí.
The Golden Gate is another sight
built by Yaroslav the Wise in the
11th century. This huge fortress
is an amazing construction. It's
one of three city gates built by
Prince Yaroslav. All three were
very strong and protected the
city well. However, they became
ruins over the centuries? Then,
in the 1970s the city authorities
rebuilt parts of the Golden Gate
to make a museum it's a great
place to learn about Kyiv's history.
