The Chernobyl Catastrophe
On April 22, 1986, one of the worst nuclear catastrophes in the world occurred at the
Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant on
the territory of the former Soviet Union. At 1.23 a.m.,
technicians at the Chernobyl plant allowed the power in the fourth reactor to fall to low
levels as part of a controlled experiment, which went terribly wrong.
The reactor overheated and resulted in an explosive force of steam, which blew off the lid
of the reactor. Large amounts of radioactive material were released into the atmosphere
Most of the discharged matter was deposited close by as dust, but the wind carried the lighter
radioactive material over the south-western parts of the USSR and some territories of
Europe.

Many people were affected by the catastrophe, which caused 31 immediate deaths. The
main casualties were among those who fought the fires caused by the explosion. When the
fires were extinguished, a crew of about 200000 people was initially employed to clean up
the site. Later, the number swelled to 600000.
Nowadays, the Chernobyl reactor is buried in a cement tomb and it is strictly forbidden to
enter the contaminated area around the plant.
2. True (T) - The text states that the lid of the reactor was blown off by a force of steam.
3. Not Stated (NS) - The text does not mention whether radioactive elements caused brain damage or not.
4. False (F) - The text states that the wind carried the lighter radioactive material over some territories of Europe, indicating that European countries were affected by the catastrophe.
5. False (F) - The text states that the catastrophe caused 31 immediate deaths, but it doesn't say that there were only 31 people who died because of the catastrophe.
