THE HISTORY OF PIZZA
Pizza is the world’s favourite fast food. We eat it everywhere – at home, in restaurants, on street corners. Some three billion pizzas are sold each year in the United States alone, an average of 46 slices per person. While it is difficult to say for sure who invented the pizza, it is however believed that modern pizza was first made by baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples.
Pizza has a long history. The pizza was not the delicacy it is now. Long time ago in Italy, in the year 1000 A.D., people used to eat bread but what they really enjoyed from the bread was the „Picea”, which is a Latin word meaning crust. Years later in Naples, which is the place southeast Rome, women used to combine flour, olive oil, lard (свиное сало), cheese and herbs to produce a pie. This pie was very popular and people thought that it was the best in the country.
Within time, this pie become so famous that people start combining different elements to produce pies with different flovours but one thing was always kept, and it was the flour crust. This is why people began to call this dish: Picea, and finally: Pizza.
The most popular of all pizzas is the Pizza Margherita, in honour of the Italian Queen Margherita. This is the result of combining flour, olive oil, lard, cheese and herbs with a touch of white mozzarella cheese, red tomato and basil. These last three elements resemble the Italian flag because of their colours: white, red and green.
As Italian immigrants came to the United States, however, pizza came with them. In 1905, the first United States pizzeria was established in New York City. The pizzeria, called Lombardi’s, still operates today. By World War II, pizza was one of America’s most popular foods. Classic Hawaiian Pizza combines pizza sauce, cheese, cooked ham, and pineapple.
In 1958, Frank and Dan Carney borrowed $600 from their parents and opened a pizzeria in Wichita, Kansas. They called their restaurant Pizza Hut because they didn’t have space for additional letters on their first sign. Pizza Hut became very popular and soon the brothers opened new restaurants and hence, the first pizza franchise was born. Today, there are more than 10,000 Pizza Hut restaurants.
Today, Americans spend over 33 billion dollars each year on pizza. In 2016, there are over 77,000 restaurants in America that serve pizza.
