Task 3. Past tenses revision. Use the verbs in the proper past tenses. 1 Last year Tom and Fiona (decide) to buy a house. They (search) for only a few days when they (find) exactly what they (look for). Unfortunately, when they (look) more closely at the interior, they (see) that whoever (live) there before, (make) an absolute mess of the walls and the floors. Still, Fiona (manage) to convince Tom that despite all that, the house (be) the perfect home for them.
2 Last summer some of my friends and I (arrange) to go camping. We (look)forward to going for weeks when finally the date of departure (arrive). We (load) the car with our luggage and (set off) early in the morning. Shortly, afterwards, while we (travel) along the motorway, we (notice) that the car (make) a strange sound. 3 In 1894 a steamship (sail) across the Atlantic Ocean from England to America. The sun (shine) and a light breeze (blow). The ship (sail) for three weeks and (be) halfway to its destination – New York. The passengers (relax) on deck when suddenly they (hear) a loud bang. They all (jump) up, (run) to the edge of the boat and (look) over the side. To their terror they (see) that they (hit) some hard object which (tear) a hole in the side of the ship. Water (pour) into the steamship at an alarming speed. Fortunately another ship (arrive) half an hour later. The ship (sink) but the passengers and the crew (be) safe.
4 James (sit) outside the office for an hour already waiting for the interview. He (feel) so nervous that he (not/know) what to do with himself. The problem (be) that he (want) this job so much. It (mean) everything to him. He (think) about it such a lot before the day of the interview. He (imagine) himself behaving brilliantly at the interview but now he couldn’t remember all those things he (plan) to say. His arms (tremble), his forehead (sweat) and his mouth (feel) dry. At that moment, he almost (decide) to get up and leave. But hardly he (rise) to his feet when the door of the office (open) and the woman who (go in) an hour earlier (come out) looking very pleased with herself. She (smile) at James.
