The virgin forests of Komi are the first natural area in Russia included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the early 90s, the Komi authorities tried to lease a huge piece of virgin forest in the buffer zone of the Pechora-Ilych biosphere reserve to a large Austrian logging company.
