Task 1
Express the same idea in English in a neutral way.

2) This coffee is strong enough to get up and walk away. (L. Nichols, In Search of Eden)

3) The streets were a furnace, the sun an executioner. (Cynthia Ozick, Rosa)

11) Tom’s arrogant eyes roamed the crowd. “Perhaps you know that lady,” Gatsby indicated a gorgeous, scarcely human orchid of a woman who sat in state under a white-plum tree. Tom and Daisy stared, with that particularly unreal feeling that accompanies the recognition of a hitherto ghostly celebrity of the movies. (F.S. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby)

12) She was of a wonderful generosity, and would give away everything she
possessed when a story of misfortune touched her soft heart. She was a great

unselfish, and disinterested. In fact, she was much too good to be true. (W.S.
Maugham, The Voice of a Turtle)

13) Why does a boy who’s fast as a jet take all day and sometimes two to get to school? (J. Ciardi, Speed Adjustments)

pull was unendurable. The pain unendurable. (J.R. Ullman, A Boy and a Man)

them. (G. Zevin, All These Things I’ve Done)

great men, the plainest beauties, the lowest skyscrapers of any town I ever
saw. (P. Lopatte, Writing New York: A Literary Anthology)

you. Because one day I’ll find you, and then you’ll be crow food. (E. Hunter, Forest of Secrets)

Task 1:
1) The sky turned purple, and bursts of light briefly illuminated the snow – a moonlit landscape. The tree branches reached towards the cloudy sky.
2) This coffee is strong enough to give you energy to get up and leave.
3) The streets were extremely hot, and the sun felt like a punishing authority figure.
4) The angry clouds in the hateful sky ruthlessly showered rain on the unfortunate man who had forgotten his umbrella.
5) The sun was preparing to set for the night. The words were hesitant to come out of his mouth.
6) Underneath the town, the air had a deep and sultry red glow. The sun was unable to shine through, and the city was covered in an eerie twilight.
7) The past feels like a faraway shoreline that is gradually moving away from us, and we are all in the same situation.
8) We were partners, not soulmates, two separate individuals who just happened to share a menu and a life.
9) But the Mole had eaten a lot for lunch and was feeling satisfied and proud. He felt like he belonged in the boat.
10) A nosy local person, who couldn't contain her curiosity any longer, directly asked a pregnant woman if she was going to have a baby. The young woman politely responded, "Oh, no, not at all. I'm just carrying this for a friend."
11) Tom's arrogant eyes scanned the crowd. Gatsby pointed out a stunningly beautiful woman who looked almost unreal, sitting majestically under a white-plum tree. Tom and Daisy stared, feeling a sense of disbelief upon recognizing a celebrity from movies who they had previously only seen in their imagination.
12) She was incredibly generous and would give away everything she had whenever she heard a story of someone's misfortune. She was a passionate lover, willing to sacrifice everything for the person she loved. She was kind, selfless, and genuine. In fact, she seemed too good to be true.
13) Why does a boy who can run as fast as a jet take such a long time, sometimes even two days, to get to school?
14) He wasn't just holding a regular man, but someone enormous; someone as solid as a block of granite. The force of the pull was unbearable, and the pain was excruciating.
15) ...lies can sound very convincing when a girl is deeply in love with the person telling them.
16) My play was a complete success, but unfortunately, the audience didn't appreciate it.
17) We find ourselves surrounded by material possessions but lacking in spiritual fulfillment. We reach for the moon with great ambition but often fall into discord on earth.
18) I dislike the vastness and influence of this town. It has the wealthiest individuals, the most insignificant great men, the most ordinary beauties, and the shortest skyscrapers I have ever seen.
19) Be vigilant, Fireheart. Stay alert. Keep looking behind you. Because one day I will find you, and then you will be a meal for crows.
20) He has witnessed the devastation of war, experienced natural disasters, and frequented singles bars.
21) The other person was fair, with a head full of golden hair and eyes that resembled pale sapphires.
22) When he lifted me up in his arms, it felt as if all my troubles had been left on the floor beneath me, like enormous concrete shoes.
23) It was a beautiful morning, either late spring or early summer, depending on how you perceive it. The grass and leaves had a delicate sheen, blushing into a richer shade of green. The year felt like a young maiden, trembling with unfamiliar sensations on the verge of adulthood.
24) I am as graceful as a refrigerator tumbling down a flight of stairs.
25) Memory is an unpredictable woman who hoards colorful rags and discards food.
