The Port's responsibilities include promoting maritime commerce, navigation, and fisheries; restoring the environment; and providing public recreation. More than 1,000 acres fall under its jurisdiction. The Port of San Francisco is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners, each of whom is appointed by the Mayor and subject to confirmation by the City's Board of Supervisors. The Port’s operating portfolio is composed of over 550 ground, commercial, retail, office, industrial and maritime industrial leases, including many internationally recognized landmarks such as Fisherman’s Wharf, PIER 39, the Ferry Building, and AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. The Port of San Francisco is unique in its ability to handle many types of cargo in an efficient and cost effective way. Rolling stock, project cargo, and breakbulk are frequently handled at the port. Several harbor and cargo service facilities are located near the terminals offering easy access to tug and barge companies, heavy lift crane services, a Foreign Trade Zone, cold storage, and warehousing, as well as full service ship repair. There are five deep water berths, an on-dock rail, cranes capable of working both breakbulk & containers, 145 acres of paved cargo staging, and over 550,000 sq.ft. of covered storage. Tug boats, pilot boats, bar pilots, water taxis, and barges operate on the Port's waterfront.
