floods occur when a river overflows its
banks due to unusually high water levels. since floods usually occur after a heavy downpour or after a sudden snow melt, floods rarely take people by surprise. there is often enough time for people to leave their homes and for farmers to move their animals and cars to higher ground. people can build up the banks of the river with sandbags to limit the amount of water that will overflow. sometimes, however, the river can rise higher and faster than expected.
when this happens, rescuers monitor the water level and warn people to leave their homes. they do this by broadcasting messages on the radio or alerting people in person. people who do not leave their homes may have to climb to the roofs of their homes to escape the swirling water and wait for rescue. emergency workers take people on boats and take them to evacuation camps on higher ground.
after the accident passes, cleaning begins. garbage on the roads should be removed. roads that have been damaged should have signs to warn drivers. some roads may even be closed until they are repaired. bridges are being checked to see if they are still safe after the impacts they took from the force of floodwaters
