A. In the English- speaking countries there is a day on which people express their love to each other. On 14th February they send special cards to someone they love. Traditionally they don’t sigh their names. The person who gets the card has to guess who has sent it. People also present flowers or offer confectionary. Nowadays millions of people create and send St Valentine’s Day greetings by e- mail cards.
B. About 18 million people live in the country. There are “original Australian aborigines” who lived here long ago but most people came to the continent from Britain, Ireland and other countries years ago. At present in Australia there are a lot of people from Russia. Most people live along the east and southeast coast of the continent where the big cities are situated.
C. In Great Britain there are different types of secondary schools. Most of them are state schools which are free. But some parents choose to pay for private (public) schools. Public schools are famous not only for their perfect education but also for the right friends and contacts which are useful for the successful future. Most private schools are either for boys or for girls.
D. New Zealand is an island country in the Pacific Ocean. It stretches 1600 km from north to south and it is the same distance from Australia as London is from Moscow. The country is about the size of Great Britain. New Zealand consists of two main islands (North Island and South Island) and a number of small islands. The coastline is full of harbours.
E. Most British cities and big towns have either a university or a college. The most famous and the oldest are Cambridge and Oxford. Oxford is a nice green city in Southeast England. The city has a population of just under 165,000. The rivers Cherwell and Thames run through the city. Oxford is often called the city of students because a lot students live and study in 35 colleges of the University.
F. In Canada there are people of different nationalities. But most people speak French and English. They are the mother tongue of 98.5 % of Canadians. More than 85 % f French- speaking Canadians live in Quebec. English spoken in Canada is a bit different from British English. There are some pronunciation and grammatical differences. Canadian English is a product of four waves of immigration from Britain and Ireland.
G. The two great cities of Manchester and Sheffield lie just 50 kilometres apart. Between them is one of the most unspoiled areas in England. This area is knownas the Peak District. The Peak District is a national park and it is protected from industrial development. it's famous for its wild lands and sheep, lakes, pretty villages and small towns. The Peak District attracts many visitors from both cities and from far away.
H. The story started in 1620. A group of people decided to leave England and go to live in America. They wanted to be free to practice their religion. And they dreamed about a new and better life. Their ship as called “Mayflower” and there were about hundred of them. The first winter was very difficult for the travelers, the Pilgrims as they were called.
