I started (start) university when I was 20, by which time I had already spent (already/ spend) a year travelling. I thought (think) it would be good to have a gap year and get away from studying for a while and it was also a chance to go travelling. I have always wanted (always/want) to go to the US, so I decided to work for six months and then spend a few months in the US. I had previosuly worked part-time in a shop when I was at school, so I got a full-time job there and started to earn the money for my trip. After I had saved enough money, I bought my ticket and finally set off.
