Cambridge to study medicine. I studied there for three years. When I left college I went
on with my studies and became a doctor. I always wanted to travel. I became a
a ship, sailing both to the East and to the West Indies. On May 4, 1699, I sailed from
Bristol for the South Seas as a doctor of a ship named the Antelope.
At first, everything went well, but then there was a great storm. The ship came
very close to the rocks and crashed into them. Some of the sailors and I got a boat into
the water. It was a small boat. When a big wave hit it, we all fell into the sea. I was
swimming for a very long time and got very tired. I felt that I could not swim any
longer. But the shore was not far away and soon my feet touched the ground. I walked
out of the sea to a beach - there were no houses, there were no people. I was so tired that
I lay down and fell asleep.​
