Arthur and Kay
1)?

Long, long ago a young boy, whose name was Arthur, lived in the west of Britain with his father, Sir Ector, and his elder brother, Kay. They lived in a beautiful castle. The family had good food to eat and fine clothes to wear, but Arthur knew that times were not easy for most people: the country was at war. Like a lot of other boys, Arthur wanted to ride a warhorse and have a sword.

One morning, a messenger rode into the castle. He invited Sir Ector, Arthur and Kay’s father, to take part in a great meeting of Britain’s warlords. As soon as the messenger left, Sir Ector says to his sons, “Get ready, boys, you are coming with me.” Arthur was very happy to hear that, but Kay, who thought that Arthur was only a child, was surprised. “But why, Father,” he said, “he’s just a boy, and this is man’s work.”

“He’ll be a man very soon and needs to know what it means,” answered Sir Ector. “To begin with, Arthur can be your squire, Kay.” Squires were people who helped warriors and looked after their weapons. Arthur liked his father’s idea and so did Kay. He wanted to have a squire and give him orders.

Very soon Sir Ector, Kay, young Arthur and a small group of warriors began their way to London, the place of the meeting. For them it was a long journey across the country.

2) ?

It was the first time when Arthur was so far away from home. At first the brothers enjoyed their way and the new places they saw around. But soon they noticed a lot of sad things and the longer they looked, the less they liked what they saw. The warriors rode through burnt fields and houses, met hungry and scared people everywhere. It was like a bad dream. Arthur was upset by that and asked his father why things were so terrible everywhere.

Sir Ector said, “The Saxons came to this country and invaded it killing the people and taking the land. Sadly, the warlords didn’t unite to fight the Saxons.”

“Why don’t they do it now?” asked Arthur. “They don’t trust each other,” answered his father. “And they don’t have a strong leader like the great Uther [’ju:Ѳә] Pendragon1 who could keep them under his control.”

“Where is Uther Pendragon now? Did he die in the battle?”

“No, Arthur,” was Sir Ector’s answer. “Somebody killed him and his family. We don’t know who it was and I don’t think we’ll ever learn it.” Sir Ector’s face was dark and sad.

Arthur didn’t say a word. He wanted to help, but what could he do? He was only a young boy in the world of men and war.

“Who has called the meeting of the warlords?” he asked at last.

“I have no idea,” answered Sir Ector. “But I’m sure this may be our last chance to unite and defend our country if only the lords agree…”
