A. At the Brooklyn Free School, New York, children make the school rules. There is no curriculum, grades, homework or testing. There is no timetable and students are allowed to stay away from school if they don’t want to have classes that day. No one tells the students what to do on this or any other day.
B. There are about 80 students, ranging in age from 4 to 18. Students choose any class they like, what and how they want to learn.
C. There are students who prefer studying on a regular basis. They choose being a part of a class with a daily or weekly schedule.
D. It is OK if a student decides to be alone and study without teachers. Such students prefer individual reading or doing individual projects. It is not important for them how long their studies last and they can last for years.
E. Others might decide against studying. Don’t be surprised if you see a student who only plays, hangs around or just has a nap.
F. There is only one rule at the Brooklyn Free School. All students must attend school’s weekly democratic governance meeting. Not everyone pays attention - some students read or draw through the meeting - but they must be present.
