In 1955 I was
was seven and
attended classes
classes at St Peter's
School. It was the oldest and the
best junior school in our town. It
was in the centre and had a little
playground. Boys usually played
marbles or football during breaks.
We, children, went to school
then, morning and afternoon, like
it or not. We couldn't miss classes.
There was no excuse for it. Every
morning we sat at the wooden
desks and the teacher called out
our names. It was called discipline.
We never gave the teacher a
note from mother: "Johnny was
sick yesterday and he didn't go to
school.” It just wouldn't do! The
teacher knew: the boy had written
it himself.
These days I often see children
in the streets during the daytime.
I wonder why they are not at
school.​
