The Greek scientist Eratosthenes was the first person whoused the word "geography

world map. He wasa mathematician, astronomer and poet. That map was diff erent from
modern mapsbecause people did not travel much and they did not know anything about
theAmericas. The word "geography" consists of two Greek words which mean "earthand
"writing". This means to draw, describe or write about the earth. The word "geographer" means
a person who studies geography, the environment and people
