. BUFFALO Buffalo is the second largest city in New York State, was named after the local creek, which in turn derived its name from that of an Indian who once lived in the area. The city was laid for the Holland Company in 1803. It was completely destroyed during the War of 1812.Buffalo grew slowly until the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, after which it mushroomed. The city became an important transportation center, a major Great Lakes port. Buffalo is the largest grain-milling center in the world. The largest employers in the area are Bethlehem Steel and General Motors. Industry flourishes mostly because of hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls. Of interest in the area are nearby Niagara Falls; the Buffalo Museum of Science, Historical Museum and Zoological Gardens, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
