Fighting the cyclones
Every year, natural disasters affect about 250 million
people and global warming is making droughts, floods
and avalanches more common.(1), but we
can reduce the number of people who die in them.
In 1970, cyclone Bhola, in Bangladesh, killed about
500,000 people, It was one of the worst natural disasters(2). In 1991, the even stronger Cyclone
Jorky hit the country. This time, people could use special
chool building(3). Unfortunately, many women and children didn't go to them a
round 140,000 people drowned,
After this, emergency volunteers and teachers had to talk to children every week about the thir
hich they should do(4).They didn't buve to wait many yeurs for the next big cyclone.(5) twelve hours before
Cyclone Sidr reached land, a Bangladeshi scientist in the USA calculated the exact areas of danger
on a computer. The emergency volunteers in the villages the warning fast.
Ten-year-old Rupa Begum and her friends ran to all their neighbours' homes. All the buildings(6), everyone
in the village wera destroyed in the cyclone except for the school shelter,
in the village survived.
With modern technology, planning und education, we don't have to lose buge numbers of lives
in natural disasters.
