The earthquake in the Chinese province of Sichuan has become the most devastating in the last 30 years. More than one and a half million people suffered, more than half a million houses were destroyed. The situation was aggravated by the approaching rainy season - tremors destroyed numerous dams, which could lead to flooding of entire residential areas. The tragedy was the death of three thousand students buried under the rubble of several schools. Their parents staged protests, claiming that the deaths of children could have been avoided if the construction of the schools were more solid: stronger buildings remained around the crumbling schools. According to relatives, poorly built schools were the result of corruption among officials. Authorities have offered to issue monetary compensation in exchange for refusing to initiate investigations.
