A Furnace room of dimensions 4m × 5m and 3 m height is perfectly insulated from the roof and the floor. The wall thickness is 20 cm of brick having a thermal conductivity of 1.1 W⁄mK. The
inside temperature is 1000℃ while the outside temperature is 25℃. The heat transfer coefficients
by convection are 150 and 10 W m2 ⁄ K inside the furnace and for the outside air, respectively.
a. Calculate the heat transfer losses through the walls (ignore the corners)
b. Estimate the cost of losing this heat per year if the kWhr energy unit costs 1 LE, and the
furnace is working 24 hr/day
c. If it required to reduce the heat losses to 5% of its value calculated in (a) what will be the
required thickness of the insulation material if the available material has thermal
conductivity of 0.3 W⁄mK
