The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles, the largest of which are Great Britain and Ireland. The British Isles are separated from  continental Europe by the North Sea and the English Channel, the narrowest part of which the Straight of Dover, is 33 kms wide.
In the  west the British Isles are washed by the Atlantic Ocean. The  Irish Sea separates  Great Britain from  Ireland.
