Faizi Adgamovich Gaskarov was born in 1912 in Ufa or Birsk (it is not known exactly). He was the first professional Bashkir dancer.
Very early he became an orphan and was brought up in the asylums of Birsk and Dorogobuzh near Smolensk. In 1924 he studied in the Birsk teachers' school which later grew into the Birsk State Pedagogical Institute. In 1925 Faizi Gaskarov entered the drama group of the Bashkir Academic Drama Theatre and at the same time the music department of the Bashkir art school. In 1928 as a very talented student he was sent to Moscow and in 1932 he graduated from the choreo¬graphic school of the Bolshoi Theatre.
For several years he was a soloist of the Folk Dance Group headed by Igor Moisseyev. It was at that time that a brilliant idea occurred to him to form a similar dance group in Bashkiria. Faizi Gaskarov knew Bashkir folklore, especially national dances, very well. So in 1939 a Bashkir folk dance group was founded. Faizi Gaskarov became its art director.
In order to select dancers for the group Faizi went about many regions and found talented young people, former workers, peasants and students, among them Irek Ibragimov, Khazina Magazova, Mukhamet Idrisov, Alexandra Morozova, Gennady Motygin and others.Through intense training the dancers became highly professional in a short time.
Faizi Gaskarov built up Bashkir dances on the basis of folk ones preserving their specific features and national character. The themes of the dances reflected folk customs and traditions. His most famous dances are "Gulnazira", "Zarifa", lyrical dances "Seven Girls" and "Muglifa".
But the choreographer realized that it was not enough for a dance group to be limited by Bashkir dances only. So he enriched the repertoire of his group by a Russian dance "Glade" (Поляна), Byelorussian dances "Lyavonikha" and "Kryzhachok", a Ukranian "Hopak".
During the Great Patriotic war the dance group went on tours to the front line and different regions in the rear.
The dance facilitates communication, it doesn't know any lan¬guage barriers. After successful tours abroad the group brought home different national folk dances: Indian, Korean, Pakistani, Vietnamese.
