Industry in the UK
Britain is one of the most highly industrialised countries in the world: for every person
employed in agriculture 12 are employed in industry. The original base of British industry

was coal-mining, iron and steel, and textiles. Today the most productive sectors include
high-tech industries, chemicals, finance and the service sectors, especially banking, in-
surance and tourism.
England is a steel producer for shipbuilding and car manufacture. Approximately 25
million tons of steel are produced annually. Sheffield and Leeds are important steel
centres. Glasgow and Newcastle became great centres of engineering and shipbuild-
ing. Liverpool is the centre of aerospace engineering, chemicals and car manufacture.
Manchester is one of the world's centres for the manufacture of cotton. Manchester's in-
dustries also include aircraft, machinery, chemicals and electronics. Grimsby is Britain's
most important fishing port.
