It also was called a Fire because of the frequent fires here. In the 16th century Red square was called Trinity, in the name of Trinity Church, located in the southern part of the square. In the years 1508-1516 along the Kremlin wall for defensive purposes was dug ditch width of more than 36 m and 10 m deep, which filled with water. In the 17th century across the ditch built bridges to Nikolsky and Spassky gate. The square was called red, which meant beautiful. Gradually, the Red square in Moscow became not only commercial, but also political center.
