For more than a decade, Ukraine has experienced several severe weather disasters - heavy frost, heavy rain and floods.
The most catastrophic consequences are floods in the Transcarpathian region. The first one took place in November 1998. After heavy rains, the rivers Tisa, Tereblya, Teresva, Borzhava and others came from the shores. They have flooded more than 120 settlements, in the disaster area one third of the population of the region - about 350 thousand people. 17 people were killed, more than 2.5 thousand houses destroyed, more than 40 thousand dwellings flooded, more than 10 bridges destroyed, more than 700 km of roads damaged. Damage of UAH 800 million was caused.
The flood, though smaller in scale, recurred in March 2001. Then more than 300 mm of rain fell in the river basin due to heavy rains. The flood killed 9 people. 255 settlements were flooded, more than 33,000 homes, 98 settlements were de-energized, and nearly 14,000 people were evacuated.
