History of the Moon
The Moon has always been visible but the Ancient Greeks were the first people to begin to study it. About 450 BC Ancient Greeks realized that the Moon does not shine with its own light. Instead its light is reflected from the Sun. Scientists in Ancient Greece also measured the distances from the Earth to the Sun and the Moon. They realized that the Sun is much further away than the Moon.
However, there was no further information about the Moon till the telescope was invented. Galileo turned his telescope on the Moon. The ancient Greeks believed that the Moon was smooth. Looking through a telescope Galileo could see the Moon's surface is actually rough, with mountains and craters. Following the invention of the telescope people began to make maps of the Moon.
People in Russia began to explore the Moon in the second half of the 20th century. In January 1959 the Russians launched the first space probe, Luna I (Luna was a Roman Moon goddess). It flew within 5,000 miles of the Moon. In October 1959 Luna 3 took the first photos of the Dark side of the Moon. Finally in 1966 Luna 9 achieved the first soft landing on the Moon. It was the first of several Soviet probes to land on the Moon.
