city and there were a lot of people. The buildings were inside
the rocks. They were like big, beautiful caves.
Years later, the Nabateans left Petra. For hundreds of years,
the city was empty. But in 1812, a Swiss explorer called Johann
Ludwig Burckhardt was the first European visitor to the city.
In 1989, Petra was in the film Indiana Jones and the Last
