Shoe shops discover
matching crimes
S
wedish fictional detectives like Wa llander and
Li ·beth Salander a rc famou ·worldwide. But recently
real-life Swedi h police were completely pu11 lcd by
a mysterious crime. Somebody was tcaling expensive
designer shoes from shoe shops in Sweden- but not pa irs of
shoes, only the left shoes, the ones which were on display.
The first robber) took place in a shopping mall in Malmo,
Sweden's th ird-large t city. Staff at a hoe shop saw two men
stealing at their boutique. They escaped with e1·en left shoes
which- if paired with the right hoes - we re worth £900.
In the end it was shop assistants who pointed the police
in the right direction- to Denma rk, where shop ·
traditionally d isplay the right shoe in the ir shop window·.
"We noticed that left shoes we re disappea ring in the past,
but we never caught the thie1es," said a shop assistant.
" ince we know that Da nish stores display the right
shoes, we thought that the match ing shoes we re probably
disappea ri ng as well in stores in Denma rk ." Ma lmo, home
to 125 shoe shops, is on ly a 30-minute tra in ride away
from Copenhagen, wh ich ha sneral hundred hops, and
many bra nds a re sold in both cities.
Yesterday police finally a nnounced that they had arrested
the men responsible for the robberies. But Msj ohansson,
i a s,,·edish shoe shop owner, fears that hoe shop robberies
"' ~ will increase this year. "Shoes are attractive to steal- they
~ are easy to move a nd easy to sell a nd they have become very c
~ expensive lately. Also many stores have cut the number of
~ shop assistants they employ." ..
g Police in Ma lmo have thought of asking Da nish hoe shops
~ to also display the le ft shoe. But this won't work. All the i thieve will have to do is move to Germa ny - where they
~ also display the right shoe ...
