WORK
Working for pay is the common experience of people all over the world, since everyone must work in order to make a living. However, there are considerable differences in people's salaries and in their attitudes toward work—some people like their jobs and some don't. For people to be happy at work, they must earn a decent salary and feel that they are making the best use of their talents and abilities. They should also feel that their work is valuable, that it benefits society in some way.
When people are dissatisfied, it's often because they have jobs that give them little opportunity to advance or develop their potential. In many cases, they have chosen the wrong profession. To avoid this mistake, the first thing people need to co is identify their strengths. Then they can determine the kind of work that :s best for them. If, for example, a young woman is good at drawing, she might think of becoming a commercial artist or a designer. To prepare herself for one of these careers, she would probably study for four \ears at an art institute or
university. For most people, the last step is the most difficult— getting the education and training that will enable them to enter the field they are interested in. It is often necessary to study long and hard to enter certain professions, and some people are not willing to make the sacrifice. With work, as with most thin 25 in life, nothing worthwhile conies easy.
Now, there are certain people who are addicted to their work and only think about their jobs, even when they aren't working. These people are known as "workaholics." Workaholics usually have their own companies and are "married" to their business. When they take a vacation, they take a "working" vacation. And they often say things like "time is money" and "business before pleasure.'1 Workaholics are usually success¬ful in then careers, but they often have dull personalities and - aren't much fun to be with. So the}' pay a price for their success.
At the opposite extreme are the bums and freeloaders, people who refuse 10 work and won't take a job, even if you offer them one. They go around saying things like "I gotta be free" and "work is a waste of time." Of course, bums have plenty of free time, but they can't really enjoy themselves because they live in such poor conditions. So bums pay a price for their freedom. For people to be successful and happy, they must have a balance in their lifes between work and play. They must have jobs where they can develop their talents and abilities, and enough free time to enjoy themselves.
