A scene’s underlying purpose is often revealed by subtext. Subtext is the meaning 1) the words — it’s reading 2) the lines. You need to
understand not only what the characters are saying, but also what the subtext

Subtext can mean 4) of what a character says verbally. A character
may say, “I hate you!” when his actions reveal the opposite emotion. Meaning
