A scene’s underlying purpose is often revealed by subtext. Subtext is the meaning 1) the words — it’s reading 2) the lines. You need to
understand not only what the characters are saying, but also what the subtext
3) . What does the scene really mean? How do the characters really feel?
Subtext can mean 4) of what a character says verbally. A character
may say, “I hate you!” when his actions reveal the opposite emotion. Meaning
5) through subtext can also be more powerful than meaning conveyed
through dialogue. Instead of Karen saying she misses her daughter, it’s much
more effective to use a visual of her picking up her child’s favorite doll and
looking at it sadly.

The director sometimes has an actor repeat his actions so they 6) when
the same action is filmed from a different camera angle or with a different
shot size. This is called matching. It’s important for the actor to match his
actions exactly so that the two shots can be cut together 7) , ensuring continuity.

An effective way to cut shots together is during movement on
camera; if an actor lifts a coffee cup to his lips in a wide shot, the filmmaker
(or your editor) may choose to cut to a 8) of the cup coming up to the
actor’s lips. But the action must be repeated exactly in the 9) and
again in the close-up for it to match in the editing room. The script supervisor
takes note of the actor’s 10) and reminds the actor to
repeat the same action at the new angle.
