1. I was walking out of the door when the phone rang.
To form the Past Continuous tense, we use the past tense of the verb "to be" (was/were) followed by the present participle form of the main verb (-ing form). In this sentence, the action of walking (main verb) was happening at the same time as the phone rang, so we use the Past Continuous tense for "I was walking."

2. When the phone rang, I put down my bag and answered it.
Here, the action of putting down the bag and answering the phone happened after the phone rang. Therefore, we use the Past Simple tense for both the actions "I put down" and "I answered."

3. He hurt his ankle.
This sentence is in the Past Simple tense. The action of hurting the ankle happened in the past and is completed.

4. He didn't answer it.
This sentence is also in the Past Simple tense. The negative form of the verb in Past Simple is created by adding "didn't" before the base form of the verb ("answer").

5. I was running very fast when he was running fast, fell down, and hurt his ankle.
Here, we use the Past Continuous tense for the action of "I was running" because it was happening at the same time as "he was running" and "he fell down." We also use the Past Simple tense for "he hurt his ankle" because it is a completed action in the past.

6. They were working in my office when they heard a strange noise.
The action of "they were working" was happening at the same time as "they heard." Therefore, we use the Past Continuous tense for "they were working" and the Past Simple tense for "they heard."

7. It was raining very hard when we arrived.
The action of "it was raining" was happening at the same time as "we arrived." Therefore, we use the Past Continuous tense for "it was raining" and the Past Simple tense for "we arrived."
