E Outside the sun was getting low. In the west the sky was brilliant with red and gold, and these colours were
shining from pools of water on the moor. I could see the two towers of Baskerville Hall, and far away a curl of
smoke came from the village of Grimpen. All was quiet and lovely in the golden evening light. But I could not
enjoy this beauty. I was thinking only of my meeting with the stranger. Every minute was bringing it closer.
Cold and alone, I sat in the dark corner of the hut and waited for the man to come.
F And then finally I heard him. Far away came the clink of a boot hit a stone. Then another and yet
another, slowly coming nearer and nearer. I pushed myself back into the darkest corner and took out the gun
from my pocket. I knew I must not show myself until I could see this man. For a few moments there was no
sound and I knew he had stopped. Then once more the footsteps came towards me and a shadow fell across the
opening of the hut.
G It's a lovely evening, my dear Watson, said a well-known voice. 'I really think you will be more comfortable
out here than inside.
